The Hockey IntelliGym, a product co-developed by USA Hockey and Applied Cognitive Engineering, has won the gold medal at the Brain Fitness Innovation Award.
The award, in its first year, recognizes organizations that are devising and implementing results-oriented and scalable initiatives that demonstrate their commitment to the brain fitness of their clients, members, patients, students or employees, and showcase innovative uses of non-invasive tools to improve cognitive and emotional functions and real-world outcomes.
The Hockey IntelliGym is a software-based program that allows players to develop perception, short-term memory focus and decision-making skills, as well as enables coaches to fine-tune programs and follow up on each player's progress. The program adjusts automatically and continually to each individual's strengths and weaknesses, and was created in a game-like atmosphere, keeping it engaging and fun for players of all ages.
The technology for the Hockey IntelliGym was initially created to train fighter pilots on the cognitive brain level. USA Hockey provided the appropriate knowledge to help adapt these similar cognitive skills to the game of hockey, and players at USA Hockey's National Team Development Program utilized the product during its development throughout the course of the 2009-10 season.

| "Wayne Gretzky was renowned for his uncanny ability to
see the game evolve well ahead of everyone else. This ability to anticipate and
make a play that nobody in the building expects is a result of having great
awareness. Most people call it hockey sense.
There has always been a debate about whether or not hockey sense can be
taught. Some coaches believe you can improve a player’s hockey sense by
repeatedly placing them in game situations. Others believe that you are just
born with. The current leaning science says that while everyone has his or her
personal limits, we can all improve our hockey sense. And in the near future,
making improvements in your on-ice play may be as easy as playing a video
game." Read the full article … |
